We are all experts at something. Sometimes it isn’t the thing we wish we were an expert at doing. It just happens to be the thing we learned at an early age, while working in a particular job, or out of sheer necessity.
I have a dear friend who became an expert in shaping behavior and Applied Behavior Analysis. This isn’t what she wanted to become an expert in, but having twin boys with Autism almost thirty years ago didn’t leave her much choice if she was going to help her boys learn to navigate their world. There was a time when I was young, and in my first marriage, I became an expert on living with and cleaning up after an alcoholic husband.
For both my friend and I these skills have helped to shape our lives. In fact, it is these two things that brought us together. When I divorced, I moved back home to Texas. It was then I met my dear friend through a group of moms with special-needs kids. This involvement also led to my helping other moms advocate for their special-needs children’s education.

This blog is a brand new adventure. I have to navigate this contemporary tool to find and engage with my readers and add value to their lives. It is thrilling and at the moment overwhelming. Somedays I feel like I’m just going down rabbit holes, but I’m learning with each one. The message is that I’m doing the work. The good, the bad, and the terrifying act of trusting your gut and diving into the unknown.
If you were going to choose to be an artist, pro, connoisseur, teacher, or authority on something what would it be? How would this enrich your life or the life of others? Is there one thing you can do today that will help you achieve it? Give yourself permission to seek out your desire and start the undertaking.
It may take days, months, years, or a lifetime to become an expert depending on what you are trying to achieve. But one thing is for sure; it won’t happen if you don’t do the work.
