Being a badass can be defined as mean-tempered and difficult, or distinctively tough and exceptional. I’m applying the exceptional version of the term badass here in this post.
In May of 2106, my life was in turmoil. My father, a health nut, marathon runner, social butterfly, and my mentor had suddenly died to leave me with a personal void and a new set of responsibilities. I had also just withdrawn my youngest son from the public school system to begin homeschooling after years of the trauma he and our family encountered at the school’s refusal to acknowledge and support his special needs.
I was driving back and forth between Houston and Fredericksburg, Texas frequently, and I stumbled across Jen Sincero’s book “You Are A Badass” in my Audible account. This audiobook was the beginning of picking myself up and putting things into a new world order for myself.
Jen Sincero, the author, was also the narrator for the book. Her wit and storytelling capability made it feel like we were chilling in the car together, like two friends on a road trip. Her advice was frank, funny, universal, and just plain badass. This book helped to keep me grounded and focused on the positive during a time of chaos and change.
“How To Be A Badass” also brought me back to my past goals and dreams. I had stuffed them away while I was busy running through the course of my life taking care of the people I love. While I was hustling at home and work to help others succeed in their lives, I forgot to work on my aspirations.
Here we are, almost two years later and, my life is reshaping itself. The hardest part has been getting real with what I sincerely want. Uncovering the layers beyond the “shoulds” that are put on us by our family, friends, work, spouse, and society is an ongoing endeavor. I’m learning to trust my authentic self and appreciate my unique qualities. I’m acting brave enough to write, and share this with you, knowing that there are people who will find fault and be discouraging.
This is where I let my badass self out and dig in with moxie. I trust that I can move past the obstacles to achieve what I desire. So can you! Let your badass freak flag fly. Stop comparing yourself to others and rating your worth against theirs. Find the time to uncover what you genuinely want from life and allow yourself to move towards it.
I invite you to subscribe to my blog and share your stories because no one wants to go through this alone. Consider picking up Jen Sincero’s book “You Are A Badass,” better yet, get the audio version.
If you want to know a little more about me and my family I invite you to watch a video I made from my father’s celebration of life. If you need a good laugh just watch the final two minutes of my dad competing in a chicken dance contest.
